Analysis of slope fracturing under transient earthquake loading by random discrete element method

چکیده
Earthquake can cause significant rock fracturing in either the short or long terms. A comprehensive analysis of mechanism is critical for assessing risks potential slope failures, landslides and avalanches seismic prone areas. This study employed 2D discrete element method (DEM) to investigate an intact 600 m base length 300 height, with explicit considerations material heterogeneity by random field theory. total 5400 DEM simulations were performed, characteristics statistically analysed. The dynamic loading earthquake has triggered amplifications ground motion damage at crest, resulting densely spaced interconnect fractures. These fractures split into a collection fragments varied shapes, fragment size followed Weibull's cumulative distribution. More than 70% generated finer 0.1 times initial size, while only few large existed base. distribution pattern could quantitatively agree observations. distributions final index cumulated fragmentation energy all normal pattern. overall bulk input was dissipated mainly discontinuities decreased increase inclination.

Rock Slope Stability Analysis Using Discrete Element Method
Rock slope stability depends very much on the strength features of the rock and the geometrical and strength characteristics of the discontinuities (e.g., roughness, wall strength and persistence). Since a rock mass is not a continuum, its behavior is dominated by such discontinuities as faults, joints and bedding planes. Also, Rock slope instability is a major hazard for human activities and o...

متن کاملPrediction of Crack Initiation Direction for Inclined Crack Under Biaxial Loading by Finite Element Method
This paper presents a simple method based on strain energy density criterion to study the crack initiation angle by finite element method under biaxial loading condition. The crack surface relative displacement method is used to eliminate the calculation of the stress intensity factors which are normally required. The analysis is performed using higher order four node quadrilateral element. The...
متن کاملOn the effect of grain size on rock behavior under cyclic loading by distinct element method
It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of rocks under cyclic loading is much different from static loading conditions. In most constructions, the load applied to structures is within dynamic ranges. That’s why a great deal of attention has been paid towards this field in order to identify the dynamic behavior of rocks in more details. Nevertheless, the nature of dynamic failure in rocks ...
متن کاملA Proposed Modeling Method in Finite Element Slope Stability Analysis
Limit-equilibrium method (LEM) and finite element method (FEM) with strength reduction method (SRM) techniques are the most widely used analysis tools in slope stability assessment. Recently, researchers have reported that both factor of safety (FOS) values and failure surfaces obtained from LEM and FEM are generally in good agreement, except in some particular cases. In this paper, the FOS and...
